In the past, patients with severe ankle pain from rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or trauma could only have their ankle fused if they wanted surgical treatment to relieve their pain. Although fusion continues to be an excellent operation, all motion at the ankle joint is restricted. Just like total knee and total hip replacements, which have helped numerous patients over the years, TAR is performed to provide a less restricted option to ankle arthritis sufferers.

Dr. Leonard Janis was selected in 1998 to be one of eight surgeons in the country to implant the Buechel-Pappas Total Ankle Replacement. Since then Dr. Janis has performed over 150 total ankle replacements using a variety of TAR designs.
